South Carolina Code of Laws Section §16-17-680 requires an individual to have a permit in order to transport or sell any amount of nonferrous metal. Nonferrous metals are metals that do not contain significant quantities of iron or steel. They include copper wire, copper clad steel wire, copper pipe, copper bars, copper sheeting, and aluminum; a product that is a mixture of aluminum and copper; catalytic converters; and stainless steel beer kegs or containers.
To obtain a permit, free of charge:
Appear in person at GCSO Central Annex, located at 1200 Pendleton Street, Greenville, SC 29611.
Applicants are required to present a valid South Carolina Driver’s License or South Carolina Identification card and a valid vehicle registration for the vehicle transporting the material.
Permits will be issued Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. (Closed daily 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.). No appointment is needed. The office will be closed on county holidays.
Permits are valid for two years, and there is no charge for renewal or original issuance, but there is a $10 fee for the replacement of a lost permit.
